David W. Thomas was elected in 2019. Sheriff Thomas has a background in law enforcement and security that spans over 40 years starting in 1979 as a Trooper with the Indiana State Police. Sheriff Thomas retired as a First Sergeant with the Indiana State Police after 20 years of service. The next 11 years Sheriff Thomas served as the Director of Security and Safety at Hanover College. In 2011 Sheriff Thomas was appointed as the Chief Deputy of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department and held that position until his election in 2019.
Sheriff Thomas is married to Vickie M (Ashby) Thomas and together they have 3 children and 7 grandchildren.
